WYEP Summer Music Festival
Join WYEP at Schenley Plaza (4100 Forbes Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa.) on Saturday, June 27 for their annual Summer Music Festival, a free outdoor event featuring musical guests, shopping with I Made It! Market, and educational and artistic activities for all ages.
Starting at 3PM, teens from WYEP’s Reimagine Media project will open the event, including Bridget McCrum (3-3:30PM), Vitamin TV (3:45-4:15PM), and The Annajames Band (4:30-5PM). All three performing acts are locals hailing from Pittsburgh and Beaver County, respectively. Reimagine Media aims to empower teens as they forge their personal paths towards creative discovery; create a community around music, culture, and the arts; and become curators for artistic expression. The program is open and available to all high school students in Southwestern PA.
Beginning at 6PM, local opener Brightside will take the stage. Brightside is a small indie pop/rock band composed of four members with two guitars, drums, and bass. Following them is Kopecky, or formerly known as the Kopecky Family Band. The six-piece act just released a new album, “Drug for the Modern Age,” with a melody-heavy alternative pop sound and lyrics that reflect on the band’s hardships over the past several years. And closing the evening will be The Lone Bellow band and headliner, Martin Sexton.
The Lone Bellow began after lead singer/songwriter Zach Williams’ wife was temporarily paralyzed in an accident, and he began writing haunting songs of tragedy, hope, and redemption. Following her recovery in 2010, they moved to Brooklyn; and after jamming with a few friends on the regular, they ended up forming a trio. By 2013, the band had grown to include five more members.
Headliner Martin Sexton (pictured right) is a self-taught guitarist and singer that began his musical journey in 1989. He has since released nine albums and one EP all while winning the National Academy of Songwriters’ Artist of the Year Award in 1994; touring with Art Garfunkel, Jackson Brown, and John Hiatt; and launching his own independent label in 2001. His newest soul-filled folk music album, “Mixtape of the Open Road,” was released in February 2015. Check out a sample of his music below:
