If you’re hip to the recent folk rock/Americana trend that’s dominating popular music today and reflected in bands such as The Avett Brothers, Deer Tick and The Lumineers, then listen up. The Philly-based Kalob Griffin Band is playing two shows this Friday and Saturday night at Club Cafe in the South Side and is just what you need to get your latest fix. The band’s tight-knit team is largely responsible for their success, as they’ve independently sold out venues in major markets such as Philadelphia, New York and even here in Pittsburgh, hence their two night stint at Club Cafe. Their influences vary and their music is rooted in multiple genres. They self-describe their sound as original and familiar – “Take a John Prine lyric, an Avett Brothers harmony, an Allman Brothers solo, and a foot-stomping live show then mix and mash to your heart’s desire to hear what KGB is all about. The KGB is a revival of what the great pioneers of the industry stood for – hard work, true talent, and building a community.”
Their debut album, June, was recorded in Pennsylvania and “aims to broaden the landscape of the Americana genre by combining various influences. The 12-track debut is a collection of reflective tales of the band’s past and a glimpse into the next chapter of their journey.” Check out a track from their debut below.
Who knew a band born out of a chance meeting at a Penn State party could come so far? In 2011, they were nominated for The Deli Magazine Philadelphia “Emerging Acts of 2011” poll.
