The Return of Rusty Lazer

Yup! You read that correctly. None other than Rusty Lazer, AKA Big Freedia’s DJ, will be gracing Pgh with his presence again just six short weeks after his much talked about Shadow Lounge debut in which azz was plastered all over the walls and the bouncing was so hard broads were flyin’ all over the place. You might be relieved to know, however, that Rusty plays much more than what he delivers to the masses via Big Freedia. Curious? The bio on his webpage sums it up quite nicely:

“Though known primarily as the live DJ and creative partner of gender-bending Sissy Bounce Rapper Big Freedia, as a solo DJ Rusty Lazer spins songs from the three hundred year old repertoire of street music his decadent city has to offer. In a single set, dancers are likely to hear the hypnotic beat of the Mardi Gras Indians, Hot Jazz from the early 20th century, Twists from the 50’s, Soul and R&B from the 1960’s and 70’s, Brass Band jams stretching across all of these eras and even the modern block party sounds of NOLA Hip Hop and the most up to date, fresh-from-the-streets Bounce Music (plus anything else he’s in love with that makes the booties go!).” – Rusty Lazer’s official website

This guy deserves some love and attention, too – though he probably has the best job anyone could ask for. Who wouldn’t want to tour the world with ass shaking in your face on a daily basis!? Hell, even I wouldn’t mind! Lesser known facts about this cat: he’s toured China, Japan, the U.S. and Europe. He was the executive producer of Scion’s Big Freedia EP and Y’All Get Back Now video. He also has a huge passion for the arts, serving as a contributor for exhibits, circuses and benefit shows, as well as an advocate for the New Orleans Airlift Project. That, and he’s playing at AVA on July 20. Do you have anything better to do on a Wednesday? Probably not!

On a related note, this interview with Big Freedia was interesting and made me lol. Peep the EP and video Rusty produced after you read. Then come to the show. Simon says.
