Last Saturday, Southside’s Rex Theater was brimming with hundreds of music lovers and local spectators to watch five DJs compete for the winning regional title of Red Bull Thre3style Pittsburgh.

DJs Bamboo, Charlie White, Midas, Petey C, and Bonics all performed back-to-back, 15-minute sets which combined a multitude of musical styles and genres to show off their skills and get the crowd amped. Reverberations of classic rock, 90s favorites, and immaculate blends of old school/new school hip hop filled the venue Saturday night, as each performer’s masterful mixing brought something unique to the table.

Judges Matthew Law and Four Color Zack kicked off the night by energizing the crowd with their own sets; Law set it off with a well tailored, evenly flowing set layered with smooth, effortless transitions, while Four Color Zack shocked the crowd with a colorful, multidimensional set that included many fun, unexpected twists.

A close competition between the competing DJs kept energy high, but ultimately, it was Bonics’ originality and impeccable technical skills that impressed the judges most. The former 2010 champ and current tour DJ for Wiz Khalifa took the stage once again to reclaim his title as the winner of Red Bull Thre3style Pittsburgh. He’ll be headed to Phoenix, AZ in April to compete in the National Finals. New York born and LA-based DJ Charlie White came in a close second, demonstrating his East-to-West-Coast flair, technical talents, and creativity on the turntables.

Stay tuned as Bonics faces off against a new set of competitors in Phoenix this April. The National Finals will determine who will travel to Tokyo to compete in the World DJ Championship this fall!
