On Friday, June 12, Rhyme Calisthenics: The Official MC Competition will host the 2015 Summer Slam Finals at Pittsburgh’s Altar Bar. The competition is based around “The Wheel of Skillz,” a six foot game show wheel with 12 different rap challenges participants must work their way through. The challenges will test a wide range of rap skills, such as writtens and freestyles, while also challenging the concepts and delivery of each competing rapper.

By combining both the unpredictability of a game show and the intensity of a rap battle, the rappers’ creativity is challenged while they compete to prove they’re worthy of the title. As stated on the RhymeCal Facebook page, “The mission of Rhyme Calisthenics is to raise the bar on contemporary hip-hop lyricism and provide an incentive for local and regional hip-hop artists to spit super fresh bars instead of predictable wackness.”

16 emcees are scheduled to battle it out against each other to determine who will be the champion. Special guest performers include Boaz, Joey Fattz, Beedie, and Jordan York, along with many others. Judges include Real Deal, Dr. HollyHood, and Nuke Knocka from PR7X.

Boaz, who grew up surrounded by violence and despair in the Pittsburgh suburb of Larimer, writes lyrics about working relentlessly throughout his life towards his success. After touring with Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Kendrick Lamar, Boaz was able to sign with Rostrum Records and grow as a performer while staying true to his Pittsburgh roots.

Real Deal, aka Trevor Weller, was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and is well-known for his success in rap and MC competitions. Real Deal has also performed with Khalifa and Mac, among several others.

Auditions for the competition were held on April 25 at Statement Records to choose the best 16 emcees from the Pittsburgh area. Past champions include Real Deal (three-time champion), Zone (three-time champion), Boka, Mista Scrap, Jess Jamez, Black Sun, Zeps, Lex Get It, and Mike Voss.

Summer Slam takes place at Altar Bar (1620 Penn Ave. Pittsburgh, Pa.) beginning at 7PM. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and guests must be 21+. Come watch these talented performers battle it out for the Pittsburgh throne.
