MISCELLANEOUS presents Yaeji, Jacob Marley + DJ Genie
About a year ago, Pittsburgh’s Juan LaFontaine launched MISC Records, hoping to shine a light on music that lies among the outskirts of classic genre styles. A counterpart of PGH’s DETOUR label, LaFontaine saw a need to provide a platform for artists whose music didn’t quite fit the mold of DETOUR’s techno- and house-heavy sounds.
Since then, MISC labelheads and crew continue to emulate extensive musical styles such as hip hop, funk and minimal. With a solid artist roster ranging from Slowdanger, to Telavision, to Good Dude Lojack, we’ve seen the release of several compilations and creative lineups popping up on party flyers all over Pittsburgh.
Their MISCELLANEOUS showcase this February–featuring Yaeji, Jacob Marley and DJ Genie–will host hometown artists and out-of-town talent who’ll be repping the label’s genre-bending styles to the fullest.
“WRCT is a super tight community and most of my friends there were DJs, so I naturally got into DJ’ing,” she recently shared in an interview with Play Too Much. “After that, producing became one of my goals…”
The DJ/producer/vocalist has gotten some major buzz on the net lately, and has since performed at various venues throughout the city of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and her hometown of Seoul. With creative inspirations ranging from James Blake, to Lapalux and P MORRIS, her production styles hold influence from R&B, hip hop, dream pop and jazz.
Even after performing in cities all over the map, she told Play Too Much that she still places PGH’s annual music and artist showcase, VIA, as Number One on her list of favorite music fests. (Consequently, MISC Records also hosted VIA’s opening kickoff party this past year!)
Come get funky with guest artists and DJs representing one of PGH’s trillest upcoming labels in the scene.
