Having played nine shows in Pittsburgh to date, Buffalo-based rock band Lemuria are no strangers to the Steel City. For over 10 years, the band has played everything from small DIY house shows to indie venues throughout the US, Russia and Australia. This month, Lemuria will be making their tenth visit to Pittsburgh while on their nationwide tour.

Lemuria’s sound could best be described as a pop-emo reminiscent of late 90s alternative rock; releases range from bright, poppy beats, as displayed in their newest single, “Christine Perfect”,  to more mellow and grungier sounds (i.e. “Foggy Smoke”). So far, Lemuria has released two full length albums, Pebble (2011) and The Distance is So Big (2013), along with several singles and 7″ records with Bridge 9 Records. To date, they’ve had a total of 20 releases in the past 10 years.

The group most recently released Turnstile Comix #3 as part of their Turnstile Comix series. Each edition of their series pairs a 7” record with a 40-page comic book, written and illustrated by artists Mitch Clem and Nation of Amanda. The comics tell the stories of the band’s 2011 tour in Russia, where they encountered neo-nazis, stray dogs, and skeevy cops.

While the trio has since signed on to a larger label, they still attempt to connect with their fans on a daily basis. Singer/guitarist, Sheena Ozzella regularly emails fans and answers their questions about the band’s music and lyrics.

Although the group was originally scheduled to play at the Smiling Moose, they’ve recently changed venues. You can catch Lemuria along with openers Prince, KheeS, and Fake Grave at Mr. Roboto Project on Dec. 16 at 7PM. Tickets are available here, and purchasing them in advance will earn you a free 7″ record at the show!
