This photo of Josh and Nic cracks me up every time. I often wonder about their nips. They have to be hard as nails! Anyhoo, they’re playing a free show at The Rex tonight and we’re here to tell you a few reasons why you should go. You know we’re sweet on them. We don’t need to tell you that. I have a hunch that they’re the next big band to come out of the ‘Burgh, so see them while you can still pull the “I remember when…” card. They’re gonna blow up. Recent consecutive stints at SXSW and CMJ are only a few of the many examples as to why we believe this is so. Don’t believe me? Peep their bio on their label’s site. PS – you guys should probably update that 🙂

“Despite having been together for under a year, Pittsburgh duo Nic Snyder and Josh Sickels have already made waves in the UK this year, and now have just signed to Frenchkiss Records. They received rave reviews for a string of live UK shows in May, including The Great Escape festival & Club NME, which were closely followed by the release of their critically acclaimed Chess Club debut 7” ‘Going Away Party’, that received multiple Radio 1 plays from Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton. Chess Club is also set to release the band’s new single, ‘Little Cure’, on October 25.

1, 2, 3 consists of long time friends Nic Snyder (vox, guitar & keys) and Josh Sickels (drums). Snyder grew up inspired by a steady diet of Mercury-era Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Bacharach and his all-time favourite, Roy Orbison, but he was lured into writing his own music by his father. A collector of punk 7’s back in the seventies, his dad was also a piano player in Pittsburgh’s monolithic Iron City Houserockers, probably the biggest band to come out of the Three Rivers area in the 1970/80′s. Surrounded by photos of his dad on stage with Springsteen and B.B. King, Snyder was inevitably influenced by Blues and Motown as well.”

So yeah. A lot has happened since that little bio was written. They released their debut, New Heaven and if you haven’t heard it yet, get with the program and give it a listen because it’s pretty fantastic. They’re also dreamy. And available. What more could you want from a band?!

I really enjoy this lil video one of the band members made. Check it out!

Rounding out tonight’s bill will be Mariage Blanc, who haven’t played in a while, as well as Pet Clinic. Show goes from 8-11. 21+. This show is free because our pals at Iron City are footing the bill, so be sure to support them at the show as well. Be there or else!
