SUNSTAR is back again this year with another killer line up. We covered the series last year when we discussed My Brightest Diamond’s captivating performance at the Shadow Lounge. This year’s festival begins with a kick-off party this Friday featuring Geña & Global Beats and NY-based DJ Kalkutta. Diverse and vibrant, the SUNSTAR Music Series celebrates the best female emerging and established music makers through concerts, storytelling, and parties. The night kicks off at 8PM with a reading titled Her Voice: Stories, Tales and Myths of Women of Color, which features poets Yona Harvey and Christina Springer, as well as others. This powerful spoken word program couples the legacies of women of color with the sweet sounds of Brazilian jazz artist Kenia Ashby. Her Voice is a program of Women of Color HERStory Month, an annual celebration of Black History and Women’s History Month.
Then, at 9PM, a dance party commences with the sounds of Puerto Rican ex-pat Geña performing her unique blend of island music, and Global Beats (Carla Leininger) warming up the dance floor with a mash of traditional and underground dance music, fusing some of the best records from around the globe. NY-based DJ Kalkutta will close the night. She has provided music for designers such as Betsey Johnson and Diesel, in addition to sharing the stage with acts such as LMFAO, Ludacris, KRS1, NinjaSonik and Talib Kweli. For a meager $15 this bangin’ night can be at your fingertips. All events take place at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty and light refreshments will be served.
