If any band is equipped to cover the entire “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” soundtrack, it’s the legendary prog rock group, Primus. Les Claypool, bassist and 90s rock prodigy, was enamored with the wonders he saw on screen as a child in the film based off of Roald Dahl’s short novel, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Now, after 20+ years of professionally making music, Claypool is bringing his childhood obsession to the studio and to the stage. After years of back-and-forths with drummer Herb, the group has, seemingly permanently, reconnected; members now include guitarist Larry LaLonde, Herb, and Claypool.
Les Claypool is notorious for taking control of the studio, stage, and sound with his innovative and technical skill as a bass player. Between Primus albums, breakups, and tours, Claypool has worked on Oysterhead, solo projects, and more, only further honing in on his talent.
In light of their new album, Primus is touring and spreading a resurgence of nostalgia and love for this spectacular story. In comparison to other Primus albums, “Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble” is a psychedelic, comparatively quiet journey through the children’s story and through the band’s connection to this story. In terms of sound, think new age Flaming Lips, but with a twang of progressive rock and, of course, Primus’ authentic sound.
The new album, titled “Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble,” is bound to bring a wilder show than any past Primus projects. The best part? If you buy their album on vinyl, you could win one of five Golden Tickets, which promises free Primus tickets for the rest of forever. That’s right!
In the meantime, get ready to shout, “Primus sucks!” alongside hundreds of fans at Stage AE on Tuesday, April 14, beginning at 7PM. Purchase tickets here or enter to win two free tickets from the NYO giveaway below!
