The Head and the Heart Giveaway
The Head and the Heart came together in the summer of 2009 after a few frequent visits to an open mic night in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. Since then, the six-person indie folk-rock band has toured North America and Europe opening for Vampire Weekend, Iron & Wine and Death Cab For Cutie, in addition to headlining a number of their own shows. The Head and the Heart makes their way to Stage AE on May 30th at 7pm.
California native Josiah Johnson and Virginian Jonathan Russell started their core songwriting partnership in Seattle. Keyboardist Kenny Hensley joined the duo after he moved to Seattle to pursue music. The band formed after vocalist and violinist Charity Rose Thielen, drummer Tyler Williams and Chris Zasche on bass were added to the mix. A year after the band self-released their debut album, The Head and the Heart, they signed with Sub Pop Records.
During an interview, Josiah Johnson shared how he came up with the band’s name, explaining it as “a balance between doing what society says you should do, like getting a stable job, and doing something you are passionate about, like having a music career. Put that philosophy into practice, and we get The Head and the Heart”.
The band has come a long way from selling self-burned copies of albums in handmade sleeves at their shows. Their second album “Let’s Be Still” dropped last year and displays a mature and polished sound. Enter to win below or purchase tickets here to check out this multifaceted group worthy of a replay.
