fitz 2 pittsburgh eventsYou may have already heard Fitz and The Tantrums playing on the radio, specifically the indie hit “Out of My League” from their 2013 sophomore studio album More Than Just A Dream. The group is on the road now, and you’ll be able to catch them in Pittsburgh at Stage AE on July 5.

Fitz and The Tantrums, formed in LA by Michael Fitzpatrick or “Fitz”, got started in 2008. Fitz’s background as a sound engineer for popular alternative artists like Beck and Ladytron as well as his education at CalArts gave him some hooks in the industry, so when he decided to form a band he was only a few fateful phone calls away from finding his Tantrums. The band, consisting of singer Noelle Scraggs, drummer John Wicks, bassist Joseph Karnes, and keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna, together creates a soulful, indie pop sound. Of his group members, Fitz has said “It was literally like five phone calls, one rehearsal, and we could have played a show that night.” In 2010, they dropped their first studio album, Picking Up The Pieces, and were named by Rolling Stone as a “band to watch” in 2011.

Now they’re playing at festivals across the country, and they’ve learned a lot from their experiences. They had a three year tour schedule for their first album, and they worked their butts off. “I think what we’ve approached is that we play every show like it’s a stadium or a big festival show, even if we are playing in front of 20, 30, 100 people,” Fitz says of his shows. “We’ve always tried to have the energy go way beyond the walls of whatever the venue is.” That kind of commitment has landed them gigs as big as the main stage at Lollapalooza, and their hard work in the studios brought More Than Just A Dream to peak at no. 26 on the Billboard 200. Of their success, Noelle Scraggs has said “Everyone in radio, from our management wanting to jump on because they saw the spark in us, they worked hard for us from the beginning; that’s a rare occurrence for a band that’s only been around for as shortly as we have.”
