Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve Giveaway
The world-renowned Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève is coming to Pittsburgh to debut this season’s two new productions: Glory, choreographed by Andonis Foniadakis, and Sed Lux Permanet, choreographed by Ken Ossola. Under the direction of Philippe Cohen, the company, comprised of 22 classically-trained dancers from all over the world, will display their precision and strength through these two contemporary dance pieces.
Glory combines classic ballet techniques with harsh body angles and fluid movements to draw the audience in. Each dancer wears long, flowing skirts in order to exaggerate every movement made. Filled with what appear like elaborate pauses, Glory allows for the fabric to catch up with the dancer as it flows through the air, creating a harmonious pair between material and being.
Sed Lux Permanet, which in English translates to “But the Light Remains,” contrasts Glory in that the dancers wear little to no excess fabric, which places the emphasis on the body’s movements rather than the clothing. The dancers express their fullest potential with challenging lifts and balancing positions that showcase their astonishing strength. With much more fluidity in the movements, Sed Lux Permanet mirrors more classical ballet performances with a hint of contemporary flare.
