Giveaway: Quantum Theatre's Ainadamar

Published On October 22, 2012 | By Kymbo Slice | Giveaways, The Arts

Quantum Theatre is an experimental company that has been producing performances in Pittsburgh since 1990. “Quantum’s artists mine all kinds of non-traditional spaces for the sensory possibilities they offer when combined with creative design.” They find it meaningful to place the audience and performers together and stray from the typical theater setup. This combination makes for intriguing, dynamic theater. Couple this eccentric approach with pristine direction and an array of talented performers from Pittsburgh and around the globe and it’s sure to be dynamite. We had the pleasure of attending our first opera and first Quantum Theatre production this past Friday night. It was opening night for Ainadamar, performed entirely in Spanish with an all-female cast. Ainadamar means “fountain of tears” in Arabic. To say this story is a tragedy would be an understatement.

If you’ve never been to an opera before, we recommend attending this Quantum Theatre production because it’s highly accessible. One certainly doesn’t need to be fluent in Spanish to follow the story, as the words are projected onto the walls for everyone to read. They say communication is 90% nonverbal, and this production is staged both creatively and practically. The vocal performances are impeccable as well. The cast includes many veteran performers who have held gigs around the country. If you were ever curious about opera, now’s your chance to finally check it out. Ainadamar runs from now until November 3 at the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. All performances are at 8PM. Ticket prices vary from $35 to $45, depending on the night, and can be purchased here.
