Greg Michael Gillis, aka Girl Talk, is widely known for his track mashups and digital samplings. When Feed the Animals dropped in 2003, critics quickly took note of his unprecedented style. Girl Talk is famous for sampling tracks from well-known musicians and combining them into one extremely danceable track.

Born and raised in Bridgeville, PA, Gillis started making music in 2000 when he moved to Cleveland for college. He worked as an engineer until 2007, eventually resigning to kick start his career as a full time musician. Unlike other musicians at the time, Girl Talk released his album entirely online, allowing his listeners to choose the price they paid for it.

Girl Talk’s revolutionary album release combined with his forthcoming genre allowed him to capture the spotlight. After 10 years of sample mashups and relentless touring, he released his fifth album, All Day, in 2010. It was quickly praised by multiple critics including Pitchfork, who called him a “master of his craft.”

In conjunction with Philadelphia rapper, Freeway, Girl Talk released a brand new EP titled Broken Ankles this past summer. Production and seamless beats are present as always, with an added hip hop element and a more evolved sound.  A short hiatus in 2013 gave Gillis time to explore ideas slightly removed from his trademark hyper-mashup style. He worked on beats with a wider range of samples, straying from his usual Top 40 samples. He also experimented with different techniques of sample manipulation and incorporated more original instrumentation.

Girl Talk will be at Stage AE on December 31st to ring in the New Year. Tickets are SOLD OUT, but there are some resale tickets available here, or you can enter to win two tickets below in our giveaway.
