MY_FAIR_LADY_283X1930Soon to celebrate his twenty-second anniversary of close association with Pittsburgh Public Theater, Ted Pappas has already staged over 40 productions for theatre. His most recent installment being My Fair Lady (opening Jan. 22nd); a Broadway musical initially collaborated by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe in 1956. The musical was adapted by Lerner and Loewe from a play, originally written by George Bernard Shaw, entitled Pygmalion.

Both incarnations tell the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who (by all social standards of the time) would never pass as a “proper lady” due to her poor speech and pronunciation. In response to a bet from a colleague, phonetic expert Henry Higgins offers to rebuild Eliza from the ground up, paying close attention to informing Eliza on proper dialect and mannerisms so that she may present herself with grace and dignity at the upcoming Embassy Ball.

Eliza Doolittle will be played by Kimberly Doreen Burns, who is no stranger to the play. In November 2012, Burns won the Broadway World Award for “Best Actress in a Musical” after her iteration as Eliza in the same piece with Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Burns is fully expected to wow audiences with a repeat performance in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production, and if that is the case it will certainly not be a show worth missing.paint monkey

This season Pittsburgh Public Theater is partnering with Paint Monkey, a Pittsburgh organization aimed at helping local culture connoisseurs enjoy fine wine and cheese while learning to create novice renditions of iconic paintings.

Paint Monkey is inviting fans of My Fair Lady to discover how they can unleash their inner artists in a pre-show painting session. Wine, cheese and painting supplies will be provided by Paint Monkey, as well as the best seats available for My Fair Lady immediately following the event.

Tickets for the Paint Monkey event and My Fair Lady run for just $55.75, but in a special give away Nak You Out is offering two free tickets to opening night for one lucky raffle winner. Enter the giveaway below for your chance to win. See you there!
