Emily’s D+Evolution Giveaway
Next weekend, August Wilson Center kicks off the fall season with Emily’s D+Evolution tour, a compelling collaboration of lyricism and live performance, composed by globally renowned bassist and vocalist, Esperanza Spalding.
Grounded in jazz tradition, the artist has produced an immense collection of projects to compliment the many parts of her being–from renewed perspectives, to shape-shifting phases of her life.
Spalding comes forth on her world tour with a new alias in her latest body of work, a 6-track album co-produced by David Bowie.
The compilation introduces listeners to “Emily”–a spirit-muse incorporated within both the album’s content, and her theatrical, story-like performances.
An explosion of “literal and proverbial electricity”, the multi-dimensional work outlines the awakening of Spalding’s inner child, and the coexistence of devolution and evolution as one. ”
Each semi-live composition was partially taped in front of a control room full of a dozen or so listeners.
Spalding and Matthew Stevens (electric guitar), plus Justin Tyson and Karriem Riggins (drum duties), decided to use a handful of their first takes to build upon the project’s energy and testament.
For the first time ever, Spalding also integrates acting, movement and stage design within her live performances, complimenting the vivid tales and concepts among her lyrics.
Spalding’s linked up with stage director and playwright, Will Wiegler, to manifest her aural concepts into physical reality. Her tour highlights the “exciting, sometimes messy” process of addressing our deep-rooted character aspects and embracing our flaws during life’s journey.
Catch the dynamic performance and hear her latest composition performed live on Friday, October 7 at the August Wilson Center. Tickets ($55) are available now, and the show begins at 8PM.
