Rap-rave duo Die Antwoord Premieres “Donker Mag” @ Stage AE
Die Antwoord is set to perform at Stage AE on August 12. The rap-rave group recently released their new album, “Donker Mag,” in June 2014, which reinforced their eccentric, brash, and sordid character. The band is known for their use of zef, an African slang word which translates to “common” in English. The term is used as a positive term for oneself, but is mainly portrayed in the white, lower-middle class subculture. It describes being poor, but sexy at the same time.
The Die Antwoord duo was born in Cape Town, South Africa, by members Ninja and Yolandi Visser. Their debut studio album, “$O$,” was released for free in 2009, and attracted an extensive amount of international attention due to their music video for “Enter the Ninja.” The duo eventually founded their own label, Zef Recordz, in 2011, where they released their two latest albums.
A recent review of the album finds that the duo returns to their original form and style in several of their songs, including “Pitbull Terrior” and “Cookie Thumber”:
The one-two back-and-forth between Ninja and Visser hearkens to the original formula of playful exchanges and boastfulness that made them lovable in the first place. It’s an undeniably catchy tune made all the more interesting by a unique Zef styled cadence, as well as the group’s obsession with animals.
The review goes on to highlight their notable stage performance and presence that they bring to every show.
The show begins at 6:30PM, and tickets are on sale now. We’re giving away two free tickets to one lucky fan. Enter to win them in our giveaway below:
