WHY? & Dessa Giveaway
Indie hip hop artists WHY? and Dessa are making their way to Altar Bar on September 25 to bring Pittsburgh a show rooted in hip-hop with an indie twist. Why? began as the frontman Yoni Wolf’s stage name and soon became the band’s name when Yoni was joined by his older brother Josiah and (friend) Doug McDiarmid. Together, the brothers (and McDiarmid) create a sound that expertly meshes rap lyrics against the backdrop of soft guitars. In the past, Wolf rose to notoriety as he put out records with other groups like Greenthink, Clouddead, and Reaching Quiet. The trio’s latest release, Mumps, etc. is their most balanced album to date. The album not only builds off of their previous sound and Yoni’s lyricism, but adds orchestral elements that take the album to new heights.
Emcee and writer, Dessa, is a part of the Doomtree collective, a record label featuring a group of seven rap artists dedicated to their craft. Dessa writes her lyrics and spits them in a way that gives you a very personal and humorous look into her life. Her new album, Parts of Speech, is described as “Mos Def plus Dorothy Parker,” a description that not only captures her wit and lyricism, but also her flow and innate sense of rhythm. Dessa looks at her new album as one that flows like a mix tape you’d give to a friend – a couple different genres that make one great, cohesive playlist.
