big-freedia-throne-billboard-650Known for its call-and-response style complimented by booty-shaking dance moves at lightning speeds, Bounce Music is an original, energetic subgenre of hip hop born out of the intimate, fun-loving nature of New Orleans street culture. Big Freedia is the undisputed “Queen Diva” of Bounce Music, and she’s coming to grace us with her presence this November to perform a byproduct of Bounce reserved for self-proclaimed “Sissies.”

Like other “Sissy” artists, Big Freedia has achieved mainstream success with several New Orleans hit singles, but she began her music career almost 15 years ago. Freedia began traveling outside the city regularly with her dancers and live DJ, Rusty Lazer, in 2009, playing to audiences on the East and West Coasts alongside many other musicians. In January 2010, she self-released “Big Freedia Hitz Vol. 1” on Big Freedia records, which consisted of a collection of previously performed singles.

As the tour continued throughout the U.S., she had her first national television appearance on “The Last Call with Carson Daly,” and by that October, the “New Orleans Times-Picayune” had dubbed her an “overnight sensation.”

Upon receiving a multitude of awards, Big Freedia’s career boomed. She had quickly gone from a local star to a national phenomenon after appearing on two episodes of HBO’s series “Treme” [as herself] in 2011, and releasing her debut EP, “Scion A/V Presents: Big Freedia,” featuring hits “Excuse” and “Almost Famous,” as well as fan favorites like “Gin in my System,” “Azz Everywhere,” and “Y’all Get Back Now.” She later starred in her own reality show, “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce,” which chronicled her growing mainstream attention and life back in New Orleans.

While she now runs a successful decorating business, Freedia recently developed “Catch That Beat,” a musical about her life that featured cameo appearances by a “who’s-who” selection of New Orleans Bounce artists alongside the story of her upbringing.

Now, Freedia’s kicking off her 2015 Bounce Shakedown Tour with a homecoming show in New Orleans October 20. From there, she’ll be trekking across the U.S. through mid-November alongside her crew of back-up-dancers, the Divas, and fellow New Orleans rapper, Boyfriend. In addition to the tour, Freedia is prepping for the release of her new single, “Crazy,” off the follow-up to her 2014 album, “Just Be Free.”

Best of all, she’ll be right here in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, November 3. The show goes down at Spirit in Lawrenceville–General Admission ($20) and special Meet & Greet VIP tickets with early entry ($75) can be purchased online. Doors (21+) will open at 8PM.

We know everyone wants to feel that New Orleans energy and experience the Queen Diva of Bounce up close and personal; so in addition to hosting, we’ll also be giving out two tickets to the upcoming show. You can enter to win them below:
