sailorjerry pittsburgh eventsHave you ever ordered a Sailor Jerry signature ‘Old Ironside’? It’s two parts Sailor Jerry Rum, four parts fresh pineapple juice, and soda water — how delicious is that!? Tonight, bars from all over the country will be honoring the 41st anniversary of the death of the man behind the drink and the Father of the Old School Tattoo, Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins.

You may have not heard of Norman Collins, but you’ve most definitely seen his work. After serving in the Navy, the ol’ sea dog set-up a tattoo parlor in Honolulu in the 1930s  Eventually he created a unique style that merged American tradition with Asiatic sensibilities known as a ‘Sailor Jerry’ tattoo. The designs represent a truthful attitude and spirit of rebellion and are one of the most recognizable icons of Americana around the world today.Screen Shot 2014-06-06 at 2.01.44 PM

Not only did Collins start one of the most popular tattoo trends ever, he revolutionized the industry by advocating for regulated standards of sterilization and sanitation that are still met in modern tattoo shops today. Cheers to that! Bars all over the country will be celebrating in honor of Mr. Collins, but Pittsburgh’s got something special planned.

A bar crawl, a bike ride, and a poker run all wrapped into one with a chance to win a free tattoo. Iron City Bikes teamed up with Sailor Jerry and 10th Street Tattoo artists to make this year’s event extra special and will be giving away ten free tattoos. Some lucky winners will get theirs on the spot! The program details are below:

On Thursday, June 12th between 6pm and 8pm you will need to visit the following participating bars:

At each location, you need to greet the bartender with, “Happy Sailor Jerry Day,” and order an Old Ironside. Each bar will then award you with a playing card. Visit all five to get a full hand and head to Gus’s Café by 8pm. Top poker hands win the free tattoos and other goodies! Even if you weren’t dealt the right cards, you’ll be able to join in the moment of silence to honor an under-appreciated American icon and enjoy some complementary drinks. Good luck and ride safely!
