In Wake: Laurie Trok

This month, artist Laurie Trok continues her ongoing solo exhibition–a series of 1,000 artworks cut from common paper balls. The project seeks to visually emulate the concept of being “thrown away or discarded,” paralleled with emotional reactions such as shame, frustration and embarrassment. Each work is documented from its initial state to the finished product, providing a history of their visual progressions.

Hip hop/art culture collective LOCAL 412 presents their next exhibit, titled “Black,” with featured projects from Pittsburgh artists, Billy Pilgrim and Danielle Robinson. A collaborative collection of the artists’ versatile styles will be on display, with each to unveil their own personal interpretation of blackness. Join them opening weekend for the third installment of their artistic partnership to check out this selection of unique and beautiful works.

Courtesy of the fine folks at Obvious: DJ-producer J. Phlip will return once again to give us a proper dose of West Coast acid booty-tech bass. Catch the dirtybird goddess in action, and you’ll immediately recognize the grit, endurance and passion she puts forth on the decks. Shaky Shrines Double Album Release

After dropping seven albums in just three years, Shaky Shrines have more than made their mark in the PGH. Band members have worked together to create a unique, experimental take on psychedelic music, and they’ve adopted a sound that’s all their own. Watch them perform live at their double album release show for “Shaky At Best” and “Feels Wonderful” this weekend.

Show your support for the creative underground in the heart of the South Side at the next installment of DOUBLE MIRЯOR EXHIBIT!–a series of works produced by over 40 emerging and established local artists. On Saturday, BOOM Concepts will host the first fundraiser in support of an upcoming dessert lounge! Briana Jackson and Shanon Williams–co-founders of the future cāk Dessert lounge–have high hopes to create an extensive event space for community gatherings, along with free baking therapy classes for children. Come sample sweet treats, support the vision, and celebrate the birth and legacy of J Dilla, complimented by tunes from DJ Selecta.
I Made It! Mine

Shop tons of cute, locally-crafted gifts and “sweets for your sweeties” at I Made It! Mine 2016. The I Made It! Market artists will be displaying and selling their wares throughout several spots in the Waterfront Town Center–including two storefronts next to Carter’s and The Children’s Place–and under the Homestead High-Level Bridge. Featured event staples include: a family winter painting activity, free horse and carriage rides, S’mores from Millie’s Homemade, a hot chocolate stand (Beverly’s Birthdays), ice sculptures, a Carousel, and more.
Loyal Order Rock Lottery

At the next edition of Loyal Order, 25 random musicians will join forces to form five new improv supergroups. After bands are selected from a hat drawing, they’ll part ways for the evening, leaving 24 hours to write three original songs and a cover. Bands will then perform their impromptu sets in Spirit’s downstairs venue on the following evening. Come hang with your favorite local musicians for a series of bad ass performances. For those who want to catch the Superbowl, it’ll be played on the downstairs TVs and upstairs projector.

Donations & Libations: Girls Rock! PGH Edition

This February, local establishment Butterjoint will host the next edition of their Donations & Libations event series–an in-house concept created to honor and give back to important local organizations. They’ll be donating all cash tips and proceeds from bar specials to support Girls Rock! Pittsburgh, a group whose mission is to empower and connect Pittsburgh’s girls and women through music. Grab a drink, a bite to eat, and catch live performances from talented female artists repping Girls Rock!

David Bowie Costume Contest + Labyrinth Screening

After an astounding public response led to a sold out screening, Row House Cinema opted for a second showing of the 80s fantasy film, Labyrinth–starring the late-great David Bowie. Prior to the film screening, a David Bowie costume contest will take place, and attendees are open to interpret the iconic artist however they choose. Be sure to dress the part–top contenders will take home some pretty sweet prizes.
