Creative Reuse Gallery: Opening Reception

Don’t miss the opening of the brand new gallery by the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse‘s first artist resident, Juliet Pusateri. As a part of their residency program, each artist will be given a stipend and materials over the course of three months to present at a two-month gallery showing. DJ Smokifantastic will be playing soul jams to compliment the evening and Pusateri’s artworks. Admission is free, and all works sold will support her as well as the Residency program.

20 years ago, Neutral Milk Hotel dropped their first album, “On Avery Island.” This key element in the band’s development deserves its day of celebration in indie music history. For one night only, some of PGH’s best musicians are getting together to play this piece of history in its entirety from start to finish. Due to high demand, the artists will play “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” as well. Layer Cake Festival took over the ‘Burgh last fall and is back again to host their first ever Music Showcase. Four bands, one comedian, and an artist are all teaming up to bring something unique to the table.
The Commonheart takes you time traveling with some old-school rock riffs, soul and gospel organs, and gritty vocals. The band
Wreck Loose is putting their own spin on indie rock music.
Devin Moses & The Saved will bring forth irreverent attitudes and eclectic influence; while
Working Breed will present a motley of musical instruments, space jams, “spy” music, and even acoustic reggae. Artist Danielle Robinson will be lending her talents for a live painting session and Pittsburgh funny man Stoph Edison will be your host for the evening.

Fresh off their collab on the Shortbus film, DeBoy and Mitchell created “MATTACHINE”, a dance music Monthly at Julius’ Bar in NYC’s West Village. Their plan was to revive one of the city’s oldest establishments with a welcoming, creative environment to inspire future pioneers and queer ragers to come. Luckily, the duo did just that… The NYC dance party’s been spreading good vibes across the nation for nearly eight years strong; and this month, it’s coming to Pittsburgh. To celebrate the music of “queer yesteryear,” MATTACHINE brings forth a vintage vinyl, tag-team mashup that’s sure to be spontaneous and full of surprises. The party goes down Saturday with a star-studded lineup of special guests on board, including the co-op’s creators, who’ll be joined by NYC performance artist, Amber Martin, and Shortbus’ Paul Dawson.

TEDx is returning to Pitt with “MOVE!” Here, local speakers will talk about the progress Pittsburgh has made in politics, medicine, technology, social reform, and spirituality throughout two lecture sessions.
