#WeLoveShadow Event

Since our parent company Nakturnal began, Shadow Lounge has been a home away from home for us. Nakturnal founder, Kellee Maize, hosted some of her very first performances there. We have hosted New Year’s Eve Parties, Block Parties, and concerts there, and it’s one of our favorite places to see live music in Pittsburgh.  When we were approached by some co-workers in our office to help raise awareness about recent mysterious complaints Shadow Lounge has been receiving, we were eager to help.

On August 22, Pittsburgh City Paper published, “Out of the Shadows“, detailing a report of unusual complaints that appeared to come out of nowhere. Shadow Lounge has been a cornerstone in the East Liberty community for 12 years, with very little incidents of complaint. At this time, the source of the complaints is unclear, but many are presuming this increased pressure is a result of the recent changes in East Liberty’s landscape.

We’ve worked in East Liberty for several years, at one time setting up shop in the former PNC Bank as part of the arts incubator, Art Dimensions, and now working from The Beauty Shoppe, a co-working space on Penn Avenue. Over time we’ve seen many welcomed changes in the community, like the Whole Food Plaza, new bars and restaurants, and Target. While we appreciate these amenities, we don’t want to see East Liberty lose it’s culturally diverse charm. In order to raise awareness, we helped organize the #WeLoveShadow Event, which gets its name from the hashtag that quickly became popular on Twitter after the CP article was published.

The grassroots group that came together wanted to organize an event where long time and brand new supporters of the lounge could unite and show the complainants how much this community stands behind the venue. The group consists of residents, local business owners, and commuters that come to East Liberty every day to work and hang out. They live, work and play in the neighborhood and consider Shadow Lounge an iconic center of the community.

The party goes down this Sunday, September 23rd from 8PM-1AM. Entry is free. The event will feature DJ Selecta from 720 Records, Clothing & Cafe and #WeLoveShadow photo ops. They are also encouraging attendees to purchase their SL / AVA Passes, which grants free access to Jazz Night and Open Mic night for 3 months, for only $20. Local coffee shop and roaster Zeke’s will be onsite selling their ‘Shadow Blend’ that was created out of support for the lounge. AVA will be hosting their Sushi Sake night next door as well. So whether you head to Shadow every weekend, or if you’re realizing it’s been awhile, Sunday night is the night to go out and show some love.
