Fight Off Winter Blues in the Rec Room
We all look for ways to combat the winter blues through the creeping colder months, and options are pretty limited. But this year, a new event series will change the pace of our painful Pittsburgh winters, once and for all.
Courtesy of Weather Permitting, guests can venture out for a new Sunday Funday tradition as the Rec Room: Winter Games series is introduced in the Lawrenceville neighborhood this January.
Weather Permitting started three years ago as a promotional outdoor weekly concert series held at Shadyside Nursery. Every week, the nursery transformed into a party with beer from local breweries, citywide food trucks, and a Farmer’s market, along with several bands and local musicians. Now, they’re teaming up with local event production company, City of Play, to further extend the fun.
On January 24, Spirit Hall will be transformed into “The Rec Room,” where friends and family are invited to “eat, drink and be merry,” and take part in several onsite games and activities.
While in the Rec Room, guests are welcome to participate in a plethora of puzzles and interactive games: “Johann Sebastian Joust” will invite players to put their skills to the test in keeping a fragile orb safe, while listening to some classical compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. Or, get into stealth mode with “Searchlight,” a co-op game where players will attempt to steal blocks without being caught in the light.
Several other team and single-player games will be open, including a wide selection of classic parlor games–from Bally to Bucket Pong; to Stump, Molkky and Gaga. A Weather Permitting tradition, the ever-popular Stump game will also take place throughout the day’s festivities.
During the first installment of Rec Room, live entertainment will be split between the smooth sounds of Andre Costello and the Cool Minors; to Miss Mungo, who’ll warm up the room with sounds of soul, funk, and psychedelic jams.
Guests are welcome to visit Spirit from 3-8PM on Sunday, January 24 for the Rec Room: Winter Games kickoff. Tickets ($10) can be purchased at the door.
Further installments of the Rec Room series will take place at Spirit Hall every other Sunday in weeks to come. Games and entertainment will change weekly, and participants are invited to channel their inner competitive spirits for chances to win awards and prizes!
