BikePGH’s Bike Fest 2014 Preview
Bike PGH is celebrating their 10th annual Bike Fest starting on Friday, August 8 and riding until Sunday, August 24. This 17-day event is Bike PGH’s largest fundraising extravaganza that Pittsburgh cyclists look forward to every year. Whether you’re a casual biker who enjoys the occasional ride on a Sunday afternoon or you’re one of those dedicated Eat-Sleep-Cycle folks, there’s definitely a way for you to participate. We’ve highlighted a few of our recommendations, but you can also view a full schedule here where businesses and groups in the ‘Burgh are still adding their own events to the list.
The Kick Off Party, on Friday, August 8, is taking place at the Pittsburgh Opera. The VIP party, presented by East Side Development, will start at 6PM and present small plates, local booze, and food by our fav Pittsburgh chef, Kevin Sousa. The party starts for everyone at 8PM and will feature live music, dancing, a silent auction, and a surprise from Thick Bikes. The money raised at this bash will go toward Bike PGH’s advocacy efforts to keep our city safe and sound for those commuting on two wheels. Tickets are necessary for this event and go up by $10 the day of the event, so get them soon!
The Wheel Mill will be inviting cyclists of all kinds to participate in their Foot Down Classic on August 14 at 7PM. The round robin tournament will test your mind, your stamina, and your balance as you compete for a cash grand prize. The participation fee is $3 and you’ll need to sign a waiver. No hard feelings if you get knocked out of the competition early! There will be beer and a DJ to help you ease the pain.
“It’s a ‘Burgh Thing Bike Ride N’At,” presented by ‘Burgh Man and Bicycle Heaven, will be held on Sunday, August 17 at 1PM. This is an entertainment ride with a purpose: to promote a healthy lifestyle. The start and finish lines will be at Bicycle Heaven with stops at scenic spots around the city, so bring your phones to share with your fans on Instagram. The 18 mile ride will conclude with nourishment and a tour of the Bicycle Heaven Museum.
On Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30PM, join in on the Carrie Furnace Ride 2014. This event will start at the Pump House at the Waterfront and participants will pedal to the Carrie Furnace site for special tour. Then, the attendees will bike to Blue Dust for some food and brews. Participation requires a $10 cash donation to the Rivers of Steel for the Carrie Furnace tour and a signed liability waiver. Get your spot early, as only 25 people will be able to partake. You can send your RSVP to email@example.com.
PGH Underwear Bike Ride will take place on Thursday, August 21. This clothing-optional event will meet at the corner of 46th Street and Butler Street at 8:30PM. This event is dedicated to promote a positive self-body image, as well as encourage a better bike community all while having a good time. Since this event will be held during dusk, lights are encouraged, and so are helmets!
To wrap up Bike Fest 2014, join PedalPGH for an all day event on Sunday, August 24 starting at 7AM. Marked trails will be set up throughout the city that highlight some of the best and brightest bicycle routes. Stops along the way will include nourishment provided by Whole Foods. At the end of the ride, don’t forget to pick up your PedalPGH t-shirt, listen to some music, and grab some grub from a Pittsburgh Food Truck.
