Outside the Lines

Outside the Lines is an annual benefit for the MLK Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural Project. Nakturnal has been a proud supporter of the event for years. The program’s mission is simple – create a place where people from all walks of life can come together to learn how to become socially functional, skill build, expand positive peer groups, express, and inspire. Art is a great vehicle for bringing these groups together, and so, the MLK project has produced more than 500 murals in Pittsburgh, Miami, Atlanta, Texas, North Carolina, Detroit, Brazil and Haiti. The program has mentored over 1000 youth and their families. Pittsburgh is lucky enough to be one of the sites for this wonderful and empowering project.

Outside the Lines was inspired by the following quote from President Barack Obama:

“You can’t avoid the class that you think might be hard because you’re worried about getting the best grade if that’s a subject that you think you need to prepare you for your future. You’ve got to wonder. You’ve got to question. You’ve got to explore. And every once in a while, you need to color outside of the lines.”

So come support the cause and Pittsburgh youth on Thursday, October 20. The event is taking place from 7 to 10PM at Static in the Strip District. This event is open to the public ages 21+ and will showcase music by DJ Strobe, a silent auction, fashion show and photography and art created by Pittsburgh and MLK artists. Over 60 murals created in 2011 by the MLK projects will be unveiled during the event.

The fashion show, “Fashion for the Future Project” is a result of a partnership between American Eagle Outfitters, Sherwin-Williams and YouthPlaces that provides employment opportunities for at-risk girls and partners them with professional designers to create their own fashion lines.

Sponsors for the event include Pittsburgh Brewing Company, American Eagle Outfitters and Comcast.
