During the 50s and 60s, the Carrie Furnace was one of the biggest producers of steel in Pittsburgh. In one day, the mill would produce 1,000 to 1,250 tons of steel. Then the 1970s came along and the collapse of the Pittsburgh steel industry began. Since then, the only parts left of this particular mill are two furnaces along the Monongahela River in Rankin, PA. They’re abandoned, totally spooky, and the perfect place for an Alfred Hitchcock themed Halloween party.

This is exactly what the guys at The Brew Gentlemen Beer Co. and The Independent Brewing Company were thinking when they decided to throw a Halloween party. Together with Rivers of Steel, the two breweries are putting together a Hitchcock Halloween party on November 1st at the Carrie Furance. You can expect a night of suspense, filled with craft beers, great food, and dancing at this historic location.

Costumes are not just encouraged. They’re expected. Anything inspired by Hitchcock, or the 50s and 60s era will do. A portion of the proceeds will go to Rivers of Steel to help preserve historic spaces like this throughout Pittsburgh. “These type of places are part of the fabric of our region and America,”said Peter Kurzweg, owner of The Independent Brewing Co. “That’s where the Hitchcock theme ties in. He was around during these mills’ hay-day.”

“We’re of the firm belief that Halloween requires a spooky dancefloor,” said  Kurzweg. They’re taking the furnace’s powerhouse and turning it into a dance floor as big as a football field with a 50 foot ceiling. The night will include drinks from both breweries along with cocktails from Bar Marco and a rum punch made with Maggie’s Farm Rum, tea, and freshly squeezed juice. Food vendors include the PGH Taco Truck, Blowfish BBQ, Gryos N’at, Street Foods, and Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwhiches.

Special sponsors include Zero Fossil Energy Outfitters and Ink Division Printing. You can get your tickets here. As a special ‘thank you,’ designated drivers get a discount. Parking is available at the furnace for or you can take a shuttle from Squirrel Hill or the Strip District. The party goes from 8pm-1am and is 21+.
