Bikers Take Over the ‘Burgh @ 11th Annual BikeFest & PedalPGH
On Friday, August 21, BikePGH will celebrate their eleventh annual 10-day BikeFest event with a kickoff dance party at Spirit in Lawrenceville. Bringing back the days of the all-night BikeFest rager, the dance party is all about community, and, of course, having a great time. Live performances by locals acts Lone Wolf, Grand Piano, and Wreck Loose will take place in the downstairs lodge. Food provided by Slice Island will be available for purchase, along with $3 Penn Beer. Along with live performances, the party will also include a dance party in the upstairs hall, a raffle, and much more.
BikeFest is a celebration of all things cycling. The BikePGH organization works towards promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, and was built on the values that an active transportation network connects people to commercial, professional, residential, recreational, and cultural destinations. The event runs from August 21-30, with different bike-themed events happening each day. Events throughout the week include Monster Trike Night on August 22, Pedal and Paint on August 23, the Pittsburgh Underwear Bike Ride on August 28, and much more. Check out a complete list of events online.
Finish off BikeFest with a bang by joining in Pedal Pittsburgh on August 30. PedalPGH allows riders to chose from three different rides, the beginner friendly Family Ride, the 25-mile Highmark City Tour, and the 62-mile PJ Dick, Trumbull and Lindy Paving Metric Century. All rides have fully marked courses that allow for a scenic view of the city while enjoying newly paved bicycle lanes. BikePGH will provide full service rest stops along each of the routes and snacks from Whole Foods Market Pittsburgh. All riders receive a PedalPGH t-shirt at the end of their ride, where they can also enjoy music and food from one of the ‘Burgh’s mobile food trucks.
The Family Ride allows riders to bike as far as they like along the riverfront trail in Southside. Beginning at Southside Riverfront Park, the trail lasts 12 miles in a car-free atmosphere. A water stop will be provided at the Golden Triangle Bike Rental, with snacks at both the start and finish lines. From 11AM-3PM, the REI Finish Line Festival will be held at the Southside Riverfront Park, where bikers can enjoy music, food trucks, a cycling expo, and a free photo booth. The ride lasts from 10AM-12PM.
The 25-mile Highmark City Tour allows bikers to explore Pittsburgh, starting at the Southside Riverfront Park and taking riders through Southside, Northside, and East End. Neighborhoods include Southside, downtown, Northside, the Strip District, Bloomfield, East Liberty, Highland Park, Larimer, Point Breeze, Squirrel Hill, Oakland, and Uptown. Rest stops include the Water Stop at Allegheny Square at mile 5, Highmark’s Highland Park Rest Stop at mile 14, and an Eat’n Park Rest Stop at Schenley Park at mile 21. It is recommended that bikers begin early to beat both the traffic and the heat. The ride begins between 8-8:30AM, and riders planning on the 45-mile ride will begin between 7:30-8AM.
The 62-mile PJ Dick, Trumbull and Lindy Paving Metric Century takes riders through Southside, Northside, the East End, and Mt. Washington, testing riders’ climbing abilities, but rewarding them with some of the best views the ‘Burgh can offer. Rest stops include the Penn Brewery Water Stop, PJ Dick, Trumbull, and Lindy Paving’s River View Park Rest Stop, Highmark’s Highland Park, the Eat’n Park Rest Stop at Schenley Park, and the GNC Rest Stop at Grandview Park. At any point, riders have the option to join the Highmark City Tour. The ride begins between 7-8AM.
The event series runs from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 30 with different programs happening each day. Be sure to check out the schedule, hit up your favorite events, and enjoy 10 days of fitness, fun, and biking.
