BikeFest 2012 kicks off this weekend with PedalPGH on Sunday, August 5th. Enjoy three rivers, seven parks, 22+ neighborhoods, four bridges, 72 streets and 4000+ cyclists for what is PA’s largest bike ride. This has been the region’s leading bicycle event since 2004. All of the funds raised will go towards creating safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians in Pittsburgh through BikePGH, the leading voice for bicycle advocacy in Pittsburgh. With the two recent tragedies involving cyclists on Penn Avenue and the most recent motorcycle cop incident, this organization could really use some help spreading the word and educating city drivers and bicyclists on proper etiquette and safety! Not to say they haven’t done an excellent job thus far. We know they certainly have!
Enjoy the city with one of 3 supported routes: Car Free Family Ride, The City Tour, or Metric Century. After the ride, there will be a Finish Line Festival where participants can purchase a lunch (VIPs enjoy a free lunch), grab a cold beverage and watch a BMX show while listening to some great music.
Last year’s BikeFest, comprised of 70 events over 10 days, was the record holder until this year. 2012 is even larger at 80+ events over 15 days. Dayom! The main event happens at the BikeFest Fundraiser Party on Friday, August 10th at the Pittsburgh Opera. The VIP Event starts early at 6PM and will be catered by the fabulous Kevin Sousa from Salt of the Earth/Union Pig & Chicken/Station Street. The Main Event Party kicks off at 8pm. Tickets are $40 general admission (only $35 for BikePGH members), or $20 students/limited income and can be purchased here.
