The Protomen Giveaway

ProtomenLevel up your geek status to another plane by getting hip to The Protomen, the ultimate nerd band! Forget about being an ordinary, Nintendo-playing hipster who listens to Belle and Sebastian and transcend the boundaries of everyday life by submersing yourself into this band’s world if only for an evening. Formed out of necessity – a result of Middle Tennessee State University recording program students and their deadlines/recording for grading purposes – The Protomen performed for the first time in April 2004 and moved to Nashville by 2005, shortly after graduating. Known for their theatrical live shows and apocalyptic themes that blur the lines between chiptune and hard rock, their work is primarily inspired by the first six NES Mega Man games. These fellas have been rocking longer than rising star Lindsey Stirling, who recently popularized her signature style of “dubstep violin” featuring occasional recreations of Zelda scores and other popular fantasy franchises. And The Protomen didn’t need an appearance on America’s Got Talent on a top tier network to catapult them to popularity. They’re responsible for a cult following due to their heavy touring regimen (and general badassery) and are set to hit Pittsburgh on March 30th at Altar Bar.

Drawing inspiration from a broad variety of influences, The Protomen cite bands as varied as Radiohead and Alabama, with Queen being the most obvious, as the group released an entire album of Queen covers in 2012. They also have plans to complete part III of their three-part series of concept albums that are weaved together by a storyline that doesn’t end well for humanity. While loosely based on the Mega Man series, the games are viewed as a jumping-off point and the rest resembles only surface attributes of the main characters.

Tickets for this show are $13 in advance and can be purchased here. Locals Winters Descent, Tommy Magik and the Wonderfuls and Far From Sunday are supporting The Protomen for their Pittsburgh date.
