Grand Buffet Reunion Show

GBThe enigmatic hip hop/funk duo known as Grand Buffet is returning to the stage for their first proper Pittsburgh show since 2009. Comprised of Jackson O’Connell-Barlow and Jarrod Weeks, Grand Buffet has accumulated an assortment of stage names. Since forming in 1996, Jackson has gone by the names Iguanadon, Grape-a-Don, Plaps, Nate Kukla, Mr. Pennsylvania, and most recently his solo gig as Mrs. Paintbrush. Jarrod’s list is equally as extensive, going by M-Dog, Lord Grunge, Viceroy, Matt Kukla, and Fred Durts. The pair have re-emerged to raise funds for their production of PITTSBURGH BATMAN, a play starring the pair and written entirely by Lord Grunge. If you’d like to know more about it, you will have to attend their show this Saturday at the Thunderbird Cafe.

Rather than dissect the entity that is Grand Buffet, we’d like to share this awesome, yet brief history of Grand Buffet that one of our contributing writers, Patrick Bowman, wrote a few years back on his blog, Speed of the Pittsburgh Sound. We don’t need to sell you on Grand Buffet – the duo’s blend of humorous and satirical rap is difficult to match. They’re a name that’s as cemented into the Pittsburgh hip hop scene as Wiz Khalifa, Beedie, The 58’s or Mac Miller, touring with the likes of MGMT, Of Montreal, Third Eye Blind and Girl Talk earlier in their career. To listen to some of their jams, head on over to their myspace.

TSAlso on the bill is Thin Sketch, a band who likes to party, dance, drink and play songs about doing so. Fronted by local comedian Davon Magwood, Thin Sketch is Lord Grunge’s favorite local band and the perfect compliment to Grand Buffet’s unique brand of humor. They can also be found on myspace.

This all goes down Saturday, January 12th at the Thunderbird Cafe in Lawrenceville.Doors for Saturday’s show open at 9 and music starts at 10. Enjoy DJ sets from Lord Grunge between acts. Purchase your $10 tickets in advance here so you aren’t that sucka who can’t get in. Shows at Thunderbird fill up quickly and this one’s sure to be a full house!
