Attack Theatre has spent the past two months laying low after the successful run of their Holiday Unwrapped performances. They’re gearing up to debut a new show, Soap Opera, and have been generating quite the buzz with their campaign, which features a large rock that was speculated to be Photoshopped into the picture, but was indeed the real thing. This world premiere mashup of contemporary dance and opera classics “draws inspiration from the classic tale of Scheherazade and the Persian King, where imparting one great story after another allowed her to survive for 1,001 nights”. The story follows the lead character through his final days and “tells the tale of a talented musical couple as she prepares herself and her husband for his expected passing, holding witness through the stories and adventures before embracing his inevitable departure.” Sounds like a tear jerker to us!

Attack Theatre has collaborated with the Pittsburgh Opera on over 16 productions over the past 15 years, forging a long-standing, creative relationship. To host these performances in the George R. White Studio at their shared space in the Strip District seems like a perfect fit. In addition to this marriage, “Artistic Directors Peter Kope and Michele de la Reza have both danced and choreographed for opera throughout their lives”.

Soap Opera features a seasoned cast of Attack Theatre performers, their newest company member Brent Luebbert, and guest dancers such as the talented Yoav Kaddar, Director of Dance at West Virginia University in Morgantown, who is bringing his 20 years of national and international experience. Pittsburgh Opera staff will assist Attack Theatre’s longtime music director Dave Eggar “to bring an artful blend of recorded and live music for each performance”.

Michele de la Reza explains: “Through our collaborations with Pittsburgh Opera, opera audiences have been able to experience contemporary dance through the lens of Pittsburgh Opera. But now we are turning that lens around and creating a new experience with classic opera music and themes through the voice of Attack Theatre. We are using dance to tell outrageous stories that have both the grand and sweeping themes of opera and the not-so-different slices of our everyday lives.”
