HEArtAttention poetry lovers! On Wednesday October 9th Saeed Jones and Terrance Hayes are having a reading at the New Hazlett Theater.  The event is presented by online magazine, HEArt and is the first of three exciting performances to come in the HEArt Performance series. The magazine, which is free to subscribe, promotes artists as activists, using poetry, fiction, essay, review and visual art to address social injustice. The goal is to create awareness and concern about racial, sexual, gender and class discrimination.

This will be Saeed Jones’ first appearance in Pittsburgh but hopefully not his last. He is the editor for BuzzFeed LGBT and his work has appeared in publications like Bloom, Hayden’s Ferry Review, The Collagist and more. He also received a Pushcart Prize in Poetry, following in the famous footsteps of past winners, Raymond Carver, Tim O’Brien, John Irving and Joyce Carol Oates. Saeed is proving to be a powerful new voice for the LGBT community and writer whose work won’t soon be forgotten.

Terrance Hayes is a professor of Creative Writing at The University of Pittsburgh. He is recognized for skillfully challenging inequality and like Saeed, he also won the prestigious Pushcart Prize. His books have been awarded the National Book Award for Poetry, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and he was also a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award. His long list of achievements also includes a Whiting Writers Award and three Best American Poetry selections.

The event goes from 7:30PM-9PM and tickets are available now at ShowClix. Don’t forget that more talented artists are reading in March and June as the HEArt Performance Series continues.
