MATTACHINE Celebrates Music, Film & Queer Pioneers in Pittsburgh

Nearly a decade ago, revered filmmakers PJ DeBoy and John Cameron Mitchell linked up for a film called “Shortbus”–an erotic comedy that paints the picturesque tale of several young New Yorkers and their sexcapades. The film received rave reviews; and shortly after, a monthly nightlife installment was born to carry on the spirit of its “queer pioneering” legacy.

Fresh off their collab on the Shortbus film, DeBoy and Mitchell created “MATTACHINE”, a dance music Monthly at Julius’ Bar in NYC’s West Village. Their plan was to revive one of the city’s oldest establishments with a welcoming, creative environment to inspire future pioneers and queer ragers to come.

Luckily, the duo did just that… The NYC dance party’s been spreading good vibes across the nation for nearly eight years strong; and this month, it’s coming to Pittsburgh.

To celebrate the music of “queer yesteryear,” MATTACHINE brings forth a vintage vinyl, tag-team mashup that’s sure to be spontaneous and full of surprises. The party embraces the mantra that all music is dance music; and this weekend, guests can enjoy everything from hand-made classic rock, to early pop joints, to old school hip hop, funk and soul classics, and much more.

As an extra special pregame addition: guests can catch a Reel Q-hosted screening of Mitchell’s additional movie, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, at 7:30PM. You can preview a trailer of the film below:

The party goes down Saturday, March 26 in Ace Hotel‘s gymnasium with a star-studded lineup of special guests on board, including the co-op’s creators, who’ll be joined by NYC performance artist, Amber Martin, and Shortbus’ Paul Dawson.
