Cirque Du Soleil: Varekai
Réjouissez-vous! Cirque Du Soleil returns to Pittsburgh with their latest performance, Varekai, March 27-30 for only six performances! This time they will expand beyond their trademark blue and yellow big top tent to transform Petersen Event Center into the surreal forest wonderland of Varekai. Varekai (pronounced ver·ay·’kie) means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies. The title embodies the production’s theme- paying “tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the magical world of Cirque Du Soleil, the troupe began in 1984 with a group of street performers seeking to “evoke the imagination, invoke the senses, and provoke the emotions of people around the world.” They reimagine the traditional kitsch of the circus into high quality artistic endeavours filled with mind bending acrobatics in breathtaking environments. “Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents. ”
Let’s set the scene for what they have in store for you. Varekai contains 11 acts, including aerial hoops and straps, handbalancing on canes, Russian swings, and juggling. It begins with a young man parachuting into the mystical forest of Varekai at the base of a volcano. We follow him on his adventure at the edge of time, in a world of pure possibility, as he experiences new found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. Expect a kaleidoscopic set, filled with fantastical creatures in stunning costumes, performing aerobatic feats that defy their physical limits.
Be sure to snatch your tickets, ranging from $40-$165, and prepare to be transported from our city of steel to the wondrous world Varekai!
