Shigeto + Beacon at Brillobox
Two killer artists from the Ghostly International label hit the Brillobox Tuesday, September 3rd for a joint tour, touting the label’s talent on their fingertips as they play the US. We’ve been hip to both for a while and are anxious to see both acts in the flesh. If you’ve managed to survive the Labor Day weekend unscathed, consider heading out Tuesday night.
According to Ghostly, Shigeto “was one of the first of a wave of young artists who grew up influenced by the label’s early output”. These influences become apparent when you listen to some of his tracks. Though he hails from Detroit, one can’t help but notice the LA influences as well. Here’s one from his latest album, No Better Time Than Now titled Detroit Part I:
Check out this recent XLR8R feature on the artist, which takes you into this studio and gives you a stellar look into Shigeto’s creative process.
Joining Shigeto on the road is Beacon, a recently-signed Ghostly artist who we’ve been waiting to see for YEARS! They toured with Tycho a few years ago, but by the time we made it to the show it was sold out, and we were SO disappointed, mainly because this is who we really wanted to see. The vocals sound strangely like a doped-out Thom Yorke, and the beats are the perfect compliment. Have a listen below. We’re excited to see what these cats can bring.
Stereogum did a recent interview that can tell you a lot more about these fantastic fellas who “aren’t trying to make R&B music” but are doing one hell of a job making music that pretty much sounds like slow R&B. Baby makin’ music.
Tickets can be purchased here. See you at the show!
