The Pandemic May Day Brass Festival
Pittsburgh’s favorite global guru, Pandemic, plans to bring us a one of a kind May Day Festival filled with brassy beats. If you haven’t attended a Pandemic Party, the tagline says it all, “Drinking, Dancing, Stomping, Yelling.” Whether it’s an Unblurred after party DJ set, or one of his live music events, Pandemic focuses on a ‘hybrid of traditional folk music and contemporary dance music from around the world.’ For his DJ sets, he’s also focused on the juxtaposition between old and new, “I particularly focus on artists that explore how technology has impacted the revitalization of folkloric music and highlight artists whose work promotes the continuation of cultural identity,” he explained.
For his live music events, he tends to bring in artists with similar mindsets, “These are acoustic/brass bands that are taking this tradition of brass music and mixing it with other styles of music, either New Orleans style Jazz, Funk, Punk, and Hip Hop.” There seems to be plenty of Pandemic to go around, and he always has something exciting up his sleeve. He’s been hosting Balkan Beat Brass bands in Pittsburgh for about eight years now. This past summer he launched Weather Permitting, a family friendly concert series on Sunday evenings in Shadyside, in addition to his frequent DJ-ed dance parties. Now Pandemic Pete needs your help to pull off a special May Day Brass Festival, Pittonkatonk, which he hopes to make free to the public, but he needs our support!
The event will feature local and national brass bands, with a big outdoor BBQ. They’ve secured the official venue, the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion in Schenley Park, and the party will go from 4-11pm on May 3rd. All the basic stats are on the Indiegogo Campaign, including a break down of the budget, so head over and drop whatever you can so this funky fest can be free to all!
Bands include: What Cheer Brigade, an 18 piece brass band from Providence, RI, Detroit Party Marching Band, a 27 piece band from…Detroit (duh), Black Bear Combo, an 8 piece from Chi-town, and locals- Lungs Face Feet, Timbeleeza, and May Day Marching Band. Get a little taste of what’s in store in the video below and do what you can to make this May Day party festive and free!
