Duran Duran w/ MNDR at Stage AE
80s babies and fans unite! Duran Duran is hitting Stage AE this Sunday night with a performance for both young and old. This pinnacle member of eighties culture was a leading band in the MTV-fuled “Second British Invasion” of the U.S. and one of the most successful bands of that decade. Since the 1980s, they have placed 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 and are estimated to have sold more than 100 million records. The band worked with fashion designers to build a sharp and elegant image that earned them the nickname “the prettiest boys in rock.” Good news: I checked out their website and they’re aging gracefully, so tell your mom to put on that extra coat of mascara if she’s coming to the show.
The band was an early adopter of innovative technologies such as the 35mm camera and were one of the first bands to use video technology in their live stadium shows. Their music videos were just as progressive, including partial nudity and sexually suggestive subject matter. Peep this one and see for yourself:
Much to our delight, electro pop duo MNDR is opening for Duran Duran. You might recognize them from the catchy tracks #1 in Heaven and Cut Me Out. MNDR is a group in the sense that vocalist Amanda Warner performs as a solo artist, but she writes and composes all the music with her partner, Peter Wade. MNDR has opened for bands such as YACHT, Massive Attack, and Deerhoof and frequently collaborates with visual artist Jamie Carreiro, who provides visual effects for her live shows. If you were on the fence about this show, this opener is just what is required, in our opinion, to sell this show. A bill like this is well worth the $49 dollar ticket price. In addition to the show, Stage AE is running a fantastic contest right now in conjunction with The Andy Warhol Museum. Fans should submit artwork of themselves based on a photo, incorporating the style of Andy Warhol and Duran Duran. Original photo and final artwork must be submitted together. The winner will snab two tickets to Duran Duran on Sunday August 26 outdoors at Stage AE and a tour of the Andy Warhol Museum with members of Duran Duran on August 27 for them and a guest. The contest runs until tonight at midnight, so get those entries in!
