Michael Atha, more commonly known by his stage name, Yelawolf, takes Southern hip hop and transforms it into many unique facets. His stage name comes from Native American roots, with ‘yellow’ representing the sun, power, fire, and hunger, and ‘wolf’ representing his “ability to survive and fearlessness.” Growing up in Alabama gave Yelawolf an edge to his music that focused on rhythms and social issues from the deep South. After founding his own independent record label, Slumerican, Yelawolf landed a deal with Eminem’s record label, Shady Records. In November 2011, his album, Radioactive, debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200, launching Yelawolf into the limelight. Since 2011, he’s released a handful of mixtapes with various artists such as Ed Sheeran and Travis Barker. Fans have been anxiously anticipating Yelawolf’s biggest project to date: his second studio album, simply titled Love Story.
Set to debut later this year, Love Story will be released by Slumerican, Shady Records and Interscope Records. Production will be credited to Eminem, Malay, WillPower, and DJ Paul. Produced primarily in Nashville, the album is described by Yelawolf as “more passionate” than Radioactive. Singles “Box Chevy V” and “‘Till It’s Gone” have created hype around the album for those anticipating its drop after the release date was pushed back further into 2014.
Displaying his knack for genre and style, Yelawolf has previously toured with multiple artists, including hip hop legend, Lil Wayne, and Blink 182 drummer, Travis Barker. His Slumerican Made Tour hits Altar Bar on Friday, Dec. 12 with Rittz, Big Henry, and DJ Klever. General Admission starts at $20, and VIP meet and greet tickets are on sale for $75. The show is all ages and starts at 8:00PM.
