It’s that time of year again, folks! VIA is back with a series of monthlies that are sure to knock your socks off. Next up in this batch of fresh artists is none other than Detroit-based hip hop producer and emcee Black Milk, who will be gracing the Shadow Lounge stage this Thursday as part of his Claps & Slaps Tour. As a producer, this guy has worked with the likes of J Dilla, Elzhi, Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank, Lloyd Banks, Canibus, Pharoahe Monch and many others. As an artist, his 2008 album Tronic capped a prolific year and showcased a growth in production technique by adding live instrumentation and richer arrangements. The effects of the tragic stroke of his former manager, HexMurda and the abrupt deaths of Detroit legends J Dilla and Proof surface in his 2010 release Album of the Year, which touches upon a dark period in his life. Black Milk remained resilient, with this release marking yet another stride in hip hop production, serving to both refine and redefine his sound.
While he composes most of the arrangements for his recordings, the acquisition of a backing band to compliment his live show, as well as collaborations with both Danny Brown and Jack White have helped position this talented producer and emcee as one of the most vital hip hop artists of his generation. Don’t believe us? Shiyat…
You can listen to more of his sounds via his Soundcloud.
