tUnE-yArDs is the experiment of the great and expansive mind of Merril Garbus. In 2009, she released her first album, Bird-Brains, which she pieced together using only a dictaphone and GarageBand. The album was an immediate success, and critics and fans alike put her on the map as an artist on the rise.
For her second album, w h o k i l l, tUnE-yArDs brought on a number of different musicians to record with her, such as her current bassist, Nate Brenner. After w h o k i l l made several “Best Of” lists, including Pitchfork’s “Best Albums of the Decade So Far”, Garbus focused on touring the US and developed what is now a dedicated and intense cult following.
With every live show, tUnE-yArDs records drum loops on the spot and adds ad-lib vocal and ukulele elements to each song. As if this improvisation wasn’t enough, her performances incorporate outside elements as well. A show could be performed with a full live band or even a puppet theater. With tUnE-yArDs, no two shows are ever the same.
