Known by many titles – from poet to performer, organizer to administrator — Christina Springer has become a highly recognized facet in Pittsburgh’s arts scene. Not only has she performed in the Steel City, but has taken her talents to Greece and India, as well. And we have a pair of tickets for you to see this awesome performer if you’re lucky enough to win!
Her raw talent has left a mark on her community, but after stepping off the stage in 2002, it was unclear when she would return. Since she stepped down, Springer has released some poetry, but her artistic activity has been minimal. All for good reason – she had to be there as a mother for her two children. Not only did her involvement with performance end, but her involvement with the non-profit arts organization, Sun Crumbs, which produced over 50 programs annually, ended as well.
However, after a ten-year hiatus, Springer is back for two performances at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Thursday, September 12th and Friday September 13th. As the main focus of her performance “She Diva Died. & Come Again?,” Springer will be delivering a very personal performance portraying the battle between being an artist and mother at the same time. Part of her performance is an examination of identity relative to raising a Black man. A jill-of-all-trades, Springer incorporates multiple art elements into her work – “She Diva Died. & Come Again?” alone uses text, sound, image and movement.
Her 1999 CD, In the Image of Angels has sold over 800 copies and can be downloaded for free for those who want to get a taste for her style. Included with the CD are teasers and outtakes for “She Diva Died. & Come Again?”
Tickets are available online for $15 (Students/Elders/Artists) or $17 (Advanced Sale) and the day of show for $20. Those who have questions or just want to know more about the artist can buy a $50 ticket, which includes a Q&A and post-show reception. Doors open at 7:00PM with the performance starting at 8:00PM.
