Pittsburgh is proud of their homegrown artists and on Wednesday August 27, over 40 of the finest around town will be showcased at RAW Pittsburgh‘s fourth event of the year entitled Allure. This extravaganza will highlight handpicked local artists in photography, film, visual art, performance, music, and fashion at the new Xtaza Nightclub (formally known as Club Zoo/Metropol). It’s a 21+ event complete with a film screening, live performances, runway shows, and the art gallery where the artists will be showcasing their work. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, so purchase them beforehand from a participating artist here, or enter for your chance to win a pair below.
Hosting this shindig is the always-energetic $ñ€åK¥m¡K€ (Sneaky Mike). You can’t miss him, he’s the tall guy with long red hair who may or may not be crowd surfing above you. He’s quite the performer who’s opened for acts such as The Flaming Lips, Wiz Khalifa, and People Under the Stars in the past. He’s also a past RAW artist. Providing musical support on the ones and twos is RAW’s guest DJ, Pandemic Pete. Get ready to get down. These two, along with a fully stocked cash bar, will keep the spirits and party going from 7pm to midnight.
Be sure to check the program when you arrive for the order of performances, as there is only a limited amount of time for everyone to have their spotlight on the stage. Elaine Healy’s work will be struttin’ down the runway at this month’s showcase. Elaine is a designer who lives, works, and has studied here in the ‘burgh. Some of her inspiration comes from the texture and manipulation of raw materials, no pun intended, but she’s into Pretty Pretty Princess too. She designs and curates styles for both her eponymous ready-to-wear line and newly-founded Yaysayers Design Group.
Another featured artist at this month’s showcase is Jessica A. Bala, who dabbled in painting and special effects makeup before fostering her passion for clay sculpting. Bala’s love of the craft sparked shortly after her college years and she hasn’t looked back since. Of her work and inspiration she says, “Occasionally, I try to capture a conventionally beautiful subject. But, I also find beauty in the ugly and unseen; the darker parts of our psyche that everyone tries to lock away.”
Providing some musical entertainment will be Road Runner, a group of Pittsburgh indie rockers. Singer/songwriter Ryan Soloman, his longtime friend and guitarist, Ryan Hoffman along with bassist, Dan Greim, and drummer, Brian Davis, make up the band who recently released their debut EP, “Greetings from the Wilderness.” Check out their new music video below for their song “Two Beds,” which features Soloman’s adorable six-year-old daughter on back up vocals.
If you’re unfamiliar, RAW Natural Born Artists is an independent arts organization, founded by Heidi Luerra, with over sixty chapters across the globe whose mission is to provide independent artists with the resources and exposure they need in the beginning of their careers to inspire, cultivate, and create. If you think you’ve got RAW talent, you can submit your work for consideration here. More information and a full list of participating artists can be found on the event website. We’ll see you at Allure.
