RAW Pittsburgh presents: Axis Giveaway
RAW: Natural Born Artists is an international organization that brings independent artists together and gives them a platform to showcase their talent. RAW hosts 30 to 70 showcases a month in nearly 60 cities across the US, Canada, Australia and London. Each event combines film, photography, visual art, music, fashion, make-up, and hair styling. It’s been almost two years since the first RAW event was held in Pittsburgh. This month’s showcase entitled Axis will take place on October 22nd at Xtaza Nightclub in the Strip District.
The evening’s host is Pittsburgh rapper and environmental activist, Kellee Maize. She’s been making music in the Steel City for over seven years and has released five albums, including her most recent, The 5th Element, available for free here. Joining her will be guest DJ duo Tracksploitation made up of Professor A.S.A.P and Jct45. Since 2009, they’ve been making live mashes with old school turntables and new age equipment. They’ve toured across the country and in 2012, they were named #3 Best Hip-Hop Performers in Pittsburgh under Wiz & Mac.
They’re not the only artists with exceptional talent performing at the event. Two local dance companies, ChoreoNova and Tuika’s Polynesian Island Magic, will display their expertise at Axis. ChoreoNova is an experimental performance group that combines different techniques with visual and electronic elements. They aim to engage their audiences on a more intimate level by adding real sounds and holograms to their routines. Tuika’s Polynesian Island Magic will share their authentic Hawaiian and Polynesian style dance. These groups will be sharing the stage with musical acts Proper People, VRIL, Avi Diamond, and visiting guests from DC Marlee in the Mix as well as fashion designer Willie Gees with hair stylist Rebecca Mundok.
RAW Pittsburgh’s Axis also features over 30 hand-picked Pittsburgh visual artists including a mix of photographers, painters, illustrators, sculptors and more. RAW gives attendees a opportunity to network with these emerging and established artists and browse their artwork for purchase. Visual artist Nicholas Carrington will be presenting his paintings for the first time at Axis and artist Jared Altamare will be creating live sand sculptures in addition to showing his drawings. Photographer Mariah Chaney (photo shown above) will be showcasing her work as well. At the age of seventeen, Mariah packed her bags and headed to Pittsburgh to begin a career and education in the craft. She uses her experiences as a young adult in the city as muse for her photographic memoirs.
