It may be hard to pinpoint the genre of MGMT – pop, psychedelic, progressive rock – but it’s easy to win a pair of tickets from us to their show. On Monday, December 2nd, MGMT is coming to Stage AE and you have the chance to go for free. Whether you hear “Time to Pretend” for the 800th time or something newer like “Cool Song No. 2”, it’s going to be a great night. If their performance of “Your Life is a Lie” on David Letterman this August is any indication, it could get pretty interesting. More cowbell anyone?
MGMT’s most recent self-titled album, MGMT is by far the weirdest musical compilation that band members Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden have released. Their first, Oracular Spectacular, was met with overwhelming commercial success and even placed in Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. It appeared that hits like, “Kids” would serve to put the group on the map much like “She Don’t Use Jelly” did for The Flaming Lips, only much earlier in their career. While I’m glad the album drew in such a huge fan base for the band, I’m even happier that their next two albums showed MGMT’s musical range.
Congratulations was a departure from the synth-pop songs of Oracular Spectacular, providing a more guitar driven sound and a couple nods to British rock musicians, Dan Treacy and Brian Eno. Their experimental 2013 album, MGMT, straddles the line between Oracular Spectacular’s electro-pop and Congratulation’s psychedelic rock. Some critics found it confusing and others called it transcendental, but if one thing is true it’s that MGMT’s style is always evolving and we can’t wait to see what they do next.
