After a chance connection through a mutual friend at Western Washington University, Harrison Mills (aka CatacombKid) and Clayton Knight (aka BeachesBeaches) became quick creative partners as the musical composite, ODESZA. Their initial releases from “Summers Gone”How Did I Get Here and iPlayYouListen – became instant number ones on the Hype Machine Popular Chart in 2012. Today, they stand together in front of sold out concerts across the U.S.

The partners come from nearly polar opposite musical backgrounds; Knight was immersed in classical training starting at age eight and didn’t truly branch out into synthetic production until shipping off to college. Mills, on the other hand, will playfully cite listening to the Gorillaz during his senior year of high school as the overarching catalyst in his music career. These differences in history could not be less of a hindrance for the two, and by working as a duo, they seamlessly fill in the blanks that would otherwise be left behind if they had chosen to work as solo artists.

Although they most typically work as a duo, ODESZA has made a habit of incorporating featured female vocals into some of their more popular tracks. Artist voices such as Madelyn Grant, Jenni Plotts, and Zyra are incorporated perfectly to elevate the high tone beats that ODESZA has made iconic. ODESZA has most frequently collaborated with Zyra who was featured on two tracks from the most recent release “In Return”. One of which, Say My Name, was Hype Machine’s number one most blogged and favorited track of 2014.

Because of this unique combination of sounds, ODESZA has always had an easy time distinguishing their sound from the traditional EDM scene that has become defined by the typical one-minute-in [bass] drops and overpowering noise. Instead of blending in with the pack, the duo focused their talents on producing fully realized songs in place of innocuous beats. Starting with their very first session, the two worked in unison, incorporating glitched-out vocals, subtly addictive drum hits, and a distinctive aesthetic — self-defined as pretty.

ODESZA will be performing at Mr. Smalls Funhouse & Theatre in Millvale on March 3. Joining them for opening sets will be electronic artists Little People and Big Wild. Doors open at 8PM, and tickets can be purchased online now!
