The Furnace Bash Giveaway
It seems like every month there is a different beer festival. In a drinking town like Pittsburgh, that’s clearly not an issue- we love our beer! Part of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, The Furnace Bash on Saturday, May 3rd appears to be the most unique beer fest yet. The most exciting and special part of the bash is the location- the legendary Carrie Blast Furnace. The event organizer, Jake Voelker of PA Brew Tours explains, “For those who haven’t been, it’s like the coolest place that you could have ever been from Pittsburgh’s industrial history. It is massive. It is original. You’ve never been anywhere like it before.”
We certainly agree the Carrie Furnace is a treasure, especially how it’s been preserved and utilized for events like this, all thanks to Rivers of Steel, who help manage and preserve the site. Carrie Furnace is the only non-operating blast furnace in Pittsburgh still standing, making it an extremely rare example of pre World War II iron-making technology. Josh discovered the space when he started PA Brew Tours and immediately thought, “This place is screaming for the world’s coolest beer fest!”
The event will feature a live performance from Good Brother Earl, food from stellar local food trucks including PGHcrepes, Oh My Grill, and Tootsie Famous, and of course, BEER– from 16 different breweries + wine from 6 Mile Cellars. VIP tickets also include a walking tour of the historic site with Rivers of Steel (plus a t-shirt and free transport to and from event!). In addition to these awesome amenities, you’ll get to enjoy the stunning graffiti onsite. Graffiti has been a part of the furnace for a while, as a legal safe place for local artists to create pieces and enhance the main Back Wall. During the Blast, local artist Shane Pilster, of 82 Concepts Design, will be doing some graffiti pieces live for your enjoyment. Pittsburgh Steel Man will also be on site performing his ‘living art’.
The event benefits two local charities: Side Project Inc., who provide pro bono services for non-profits and helped organize the event, and the Mario Lemieux Foundation, which is dedicated to cancer research and various initiatives with Children’s Hospital. Unlike most benefits, 100% of proceeds will benefit these two organizations, something fairly unheard of, and super amazing of them. Jake explained, ” We’re driven to change the Pittsburgh landscape with things we have a passion for and can have fun with.” Right on Jake! We certainly agree with the event motto, “Beer+ Music+ Art+ Charity = Awesomeness!” Another super amazing thing? The event will be solar powered by Zero Fossil, and all waste will be disposed of by Zero Waste Pittsburgh.
You can also plan safely by utilizing the transportation services PA Beer Tours is offering.
