Like many others, Chicago native F. Stokes rose from poverty-stricken youth to international fame. Through the mediums of rap, hip-hop and spoken word poetry, F. Stokes has spread his carefully-crafted message and engaging stage presence while making a name for himself. Success didn’t come easy, however, and his biggest challenges struck him head-on, as soon as he came into the world. “I’m from the ghetto. My father’s in prison for murder, my mother had me when she was like 17, 18 years old. My little brother’s in prison for murder, my best friend was murdered. I’ve had friends get kidnapped. I’ve been through the worst already, I’m conditioned for this shit. My biggest heartbreak came when my father left me. So a fan not liking my music, it’s all good man. I been through that shit.” – F. Stokes in an excellent interview with Motherboard.
F. Stokes is set to play Shadow Lounge this Sunday, April 22. His captivating stage presence is a testament to the journey he has endured. A piece of his bio reads: “At 19, F.Stokes made the move to New York with $30 in his pocket to pursue his dream and continue creating. He did anything he could to stay afloat in New York – worked as a bathroom attendant, waiter, busboy, dish washer, food runner, bar back, and doorman. Reflecting on his past and present, he continues to write. The negative (his father’s life prison sentence, childhood poverty, drug sales, guns) and the positive (the strong bond with his mother, his belief that we all have the ability to save someone’s life, and his motto “aspire to inspireâ€) fuel his art.
Today, F.Stokes is bringing his unique blend of hip-hop and poetry across the globe. His stage presence is simply captivating; attracting and engaging crowds of all demographics and backgrounds, by mixing provocatively cutting edge lyrics, with superb stage-presence and engaging his audience. F. has toured internationally, making stops in France, England, Berlin, Austria, Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland and Australia. He has toured across the United States playing venues such as Club Nokia (LA), Bowery Ballroom (NYC), Gramercy Theatre (NYC), Union Transfer (Philadelphia, PA), The Middle East (Boston, MA) to packing The Majestic Theater in his hometown Madison, WI. He feels truly blessed to have made a stop in nearly every state. He will be performing at Essence Music Festival and Funk Fest in the summer of 2012 as well as opening for hip-hop legends Rev Run and MC Hammer.”
