DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist – The Renegades of Rhythm Giveaway
The tour aims to celebrate the legacy of hip-hop legend and Universal Zulu Nation founder, Kevin Donovan, aka Afrika Bambaataa. The show will only use vinyl from his historic music collection of over 40,000 records, which includes the best of soul, rap, soca, calypso, salsa, and more.
DJ Shadow is widely recognized as a key figure in developing the instrumental hip-hop style in the early nineties associated with the UK Mo’ Wax label that features experimentation with short vocal samples. He has quite the collection himself with over 60,000 records taking up space in his private studio and storage units around San Francisco. His first album, Endtroducing… holds the world record as “The First Completely Sampled Album.”
Ozomatli veteran Cut Chemist is admired for his role in Jurassic 5 as DJ and as a producer on the majority of their albums. He and Shadow have also made four DJ Mixes together in the course of their careers. Chemist was in the spotlight a few years ago for his appearance in the award-winning documentary This is the Life. The documentary tells the story of the music movement that ignited The Good Life Cafe and its open mic workshops where he debuted with the Unity Committee and started J5 in South Central Los Angeles.
The last time Chemist joined Shadow on the road was during their worldwide tour for the The Hard Sell mix in 2008. Shadow prefaced the Renegades of Rhythm Tour by telling audiences to get ready for something ‘epic.’ They also have the blessing of Bambaataa, who says the duo will “blow your funky mind.” The two will be joined by Pittsburgh’s Selecta. The doors open at 8PM and the show starts at 9PM. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here, or you can enter our giveaway below.
